Try making Air Fryer Bratwurst instead of cooking brats on the grill on the stovetop. This is an easy, hands-free, and efficient way to gook perfect bratwurst!
Bratwurst or 'brats' as they are commonly called, are a breakfast staple here in Switzerland. I've always cooked my brats on the stovetop, in a cast iron pan, and sometimes in the oven under the broiler. This is until I discovered how to make them in the air fryer, and now I'm hooked! Air fryer bratwurst is by far, the easiest way to cook your brats.
My preferred variety of sausage is the pork traditional bratwurst. Bratwurst is simply perfect when paired with some sauerkraut and mustard on the side, but I've mixed it up a bit, and served air fryer bratwurst with some air fryer breakfast potatoes.
The brats are cooked evenly, and the clean-up is so much easier in the air fryer when compared to the cast iron pan or even the broiler. It's also a super-efficient way to cook bratwurst - 10-12 minutes at 350 F, and you don't have to lift a hand.
Ingredients
To make bratwurst in the air fryer, you will need..... bratwurst of course! I have used pork bratwurst, available at Swiss and German supermarkets. This particular variety I've used in this recipe is a Mediterranean-style pork bratwurst, flavored with dried tomatoes and olives. It comes in a pack of two.
Since bratwurst is a preseasoned sausage, you don't need anything else to cook these sausages with.
You can go for any variety of brats that you like, and you can cook as many brats as you can fit into your air fryer basket without crowding the basket - overcrowding the air fryer basket will not let the brats cook evenly.
Step by step instructions
To air fry the brats, I have used my Instant Vortex air fryer. The air fryer preheats automatically, for 3 minutes before it is ready for the air frying cycle.
Once preheated, take out the air fryer basket, place the brats inside, and return the basket to the air fryer. Air fry at 350 F (180 C) for 12 minutes.
Midway through the air frying cycle, flip the brats over, to cook them evenly on both sides.
Once done, the air fryer bratwurst will look like this:
Serving Suggestions
Bratwurst is best served with a side of sauerkraut and mustard - this is the way street vendors often serve bratwurst. Optionally, you can also serve bratwurst with a side of German potato salad or serve it as I did - with air fryer breakfast potatoes!
